2007, 15 C-Prints
This photo series consists of a series of portraits taken of extended family at Christmas 2006. The project engages with the idea of immutable physical markers such as race. I am of full Chinese decent, but my extended family includes many half, quarter, and full Caucasians. By displaying these photographs together, I hope to raise questions about the judgements one makes about a person's background based on their racial identity. Underlying all of this is the fact that these photos were taken at the first holiday after the death of my mother. I returned home to Michigan to find that family dynamics had shifted dramatically as she was the emotional core. These photographs document the unspoken loss that we were all feeling that day and our attempts to construct some semblance of normalcy.
