I.O.U. examines the practice of public, roadside memorials. Over time, these makeshift memorials often undergo a process of decay and neglect until they are ultimately removed or absorbed into the natural landscape. In this process, the intent behind this practice comes into question. Are these memorials erected as a way to pay tribute to a friend or relative? As a way of collectively morining and expressing gratitude? Or are these memorials vehicles through which we enact our own fears, missed opportunities, desires and limitations? These are all questions contemplated in these works.
