Infinite Regress
2009, Site Specific Installation
with Michelle Yun

The relationship between China and the United States is comprised of a delicate balance of political might and economic interdependence. Our materialistic society is reliant on affordable products ‘Made in China’ and conversely, the steady rise of the Chinese economy has been largely created on the back of western consumer spending. An entire class of migrant workers has flooded the urban centers in China to work in often dirty and unsafe factories to manufacture products for import to the U.S. where American consumers acquire these items without considering their humble and often unsavory origins.

This site-specific installation, created specifically for the Present Tense Biennial, includes clothing and other luxury goods representative of what is manufactured in China, now fabricated out of dried foodstuffs and packaging imported from China. These ‘products’ will mimic an authentic window display, the walls behind the products showcasing documentary images of Chinese factory employees at work to juxtapose the products being offered.
